Fundraising Benefits Like Miles for Meso Are Important to Finding a Cure -

The amount of research dollars for orphan diseases like mesothelioma is rare. That is why the services of Miles for Meso races as an initiative of the Simmons Mesothelioma Foundation, are so critical to the effort to find a cure.

This Sunday Simmons Hanly Conroy sponsor the first Miles for Meso 2011 in Boca Raton, Florida. It is organized by the meso survivor and advocate Larry Davis. There are four years, Larry was told he had six months to live. Larry believes he has won his battle against mesothelioma because of his willingness to think outside the box when it came to his treatment options and his love of running.

multiple Now, four years later, Larry ran marathons and hosted several events to promote awareness of mesothelioma. To the south Florida race this year, he recruited his physician, Dr. Richard Alexander, a clinical researcher from mesothelioma of the University of Maryland Medical Center, talking the night before the event about his research and the importance of fundraising events as Miles for Meso.

"This kind of support will be increasingly important," he told a reporter from the Sun Sentential. "The competition for research funds is fierce these days.

Section, less than 10 percent of research projects submitted to the National Institutes of Health receive federal funding. Less than one percent of funded projects are projects of mesothelioma or lung cancer.

Thanks to the efforts of non-profit organizations such as Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation, and the Simmons Mesothelioma Foundation, alternative funding is available to medical experts who are working to find a cure.
