What were the events that led to your diagnosis?
In late November 09, I began to have pain in my right side and thought it was a kidney problem. When this has been refuted and then I start to get out of breath at the slightest effort, my doctor found that there was fluid in my lungs. Throughout December 09, I was in and out of hospital having fluid removed and tests done without anyone put a name to my affection.
When were you diagnosed and what type of mesothelioma?
referred me to City Hospital in Belfast 4 e January 2010 for a biopsy and thoracic surgeon told me I had pleural mesothelioma.
What were your biggest questions after being diagnosed?
something can be done to remedy the situation?
What was your reaction to hearing your diagnosis was cancer?
Initially, a shock, but I began to find as much as possible about mesothelioma, determined to do what was necessary to combat it.
What was your reaction to family?
They were very concerned and very supportive.
Where did you turn for information?
The medical staff of the hospital and the city as the Internet
What are the treatment options have you been offered and what you choose to do
surgeon, Mr. McManus described three options: use of talc to dry the fluid in my lungs;.? Stripping the lining of my lungs to remove the tumor; Withdrawal of the entire lung. Because I am in good health, he recommended the 2 he option , followed by chemotherapy.
Have you traveled in a specialized center?
Yes, but it was only 8 miles.
What have you found to be most useful in the treatment of your diagnosis?
have a positive attitude, plus the magnificent support from family and friends.
What message would you send to the mesothelioma community? (warriors fighting for newly diagnosed or)
Try to stay positive, believe the cure is just around the corner. Plan a small project each month to give you something to look forward. Be open to alternative remedies such as homeopathy and do not forget to pray!
