Minnesota Mother and Mesothelioma Victim Shares Story of Hope -

A Minnesota mesothelioma patient claims that she is cured, according to an article in the Minnesota Star Tribune. Heather Von St. James, Roseville, MN, was diagnosed with mesothelioma there are two and a half years, but after suffering a rare surgery that removed his left lung, his cancer has not returned. The surgery was performed by Dr. Sugarbaker, who heads the International Mesothelioma Program at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston.

Mesothelioma is a rare cancer caused by asbestos exposure that attacks most often the lining of the lungs (known as pleural mesothelioma). Von St. James says that his cancer was caused by exposure to second-hand asbestos from (a construction worker) of his father asbestos work clothes covered. Sugarbaker notes that doctors are seeing more and more patients with mesothelioma exposure to second-hand asbestos.

Von St. James is married with a 3 year old daughter, Lily, who was aged just three months when she was diagnosed with mesothelioma. She was not sick since she finished treatment for mesothelioma 2 years ago. She told the Minnesota Star Tribune that she will be the "first patient to live more than 50 years."
