Simmons Hanly Conroy lawyer Gloria Colon is featured this week in Missouri Lawyers Weekly for his inspiring story and dedication to help veterans. Colon is part of our team of litigation asbestos, but also puts countless hours helping homeless vets in the area of St. Louis. His pro-bono work with veterans helped Simmons Hanly Conroy gain recognition as Pro Bono Office of the Illinois State Bar Association in 08.
Colon and another lawyer and two assistants legal, served nearly 250 veterans in 08 to date. Its legal efforts include handling traffic tickets and other minor citations that prevent veterans obtain work. Often, veterans will be unable to pay their bills and will eventually have a warrant issued for their arrest. These warrants prevent them from seeking employment. Colon served 22 years in the Army and, for a brief time, was homeless in New York City. In the article, Colon says the work reminds her who she was and where she was. "Every face of every veteran is my life right in front of me in their eyes," she said. "It certainly made me count my blessings."
