Catonsville residents want larger responses Maryland State concerning the dangers of asbestos as a natural rock formation appeared in the middle of a construction site. The neighbors are not only concerned about their health but are increasingly concerned about the regulations of the State and the County regarding the removal of the rock.
Why such a fuss about a rock? It turns out that this rock is asbestos. Exposure to asbestos in the air can lead to diseases such as asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma, a terminal cancer, the construction company working on the site crushed rock, sending asbestos in the air.
Enterprise Homes, the company that performs the crash, immediately stopped operations and voluntarily tested the neighbors for asbestos, but it is the fault of the state that have really upset residents. It is questioned to many residents if the state of Maryland passed the Emergency Response Law of the asbestos risk which would deal with situations like these. AHERA several requirements, including the inspection of materials containing asbestos known every three years, the maintenance of asbestos updated management plans and training of security personnel and ore processing. Many residents feel that there is no county or state regulations to deal with exposure to asbestos, but that federal standards have been followed. The Maryland Department of the Environment has expressed in an article Hometown Annapolis that there is no need to mandate asbestos treatment guidelines for companies like Enterprise when they are ready to cooperate and make efforts to remedy the situation.
Construction at the site in Catonsville resumed, although the rock is crushed asbestos. The neighbors are left to deal with the dust and debris of the site on their homes and in their courses. Although they are told the residue was tested and does not contain asbestos, many are still uncertain. There is no doubt that residents hope that the state and local jurisdiction will come up with an action plan to deal with similar situations in the future.
