Last week, The Southern, a newspaper for Southern Illinois, published an article about a local woman with mesothelioma who worked diligently to raise awareness of mesothelioma and the dangers of asbestos. Lacey Caraway was diagnosed with mesothelioma in December 05. Since mesothelioma treatment plan consisted of three surgeries and six cycles of chemotherapy. She is now in remission.
The story of Lacey is one of courage and determination. It is also an important reminder that there is still much work to do in the fight to ban asbestos. Nationally, Lacey and her mother are working to help get the bill through Congress to ban asbestos. The Senate passed its version unanimously in October 07, and the House version is currently being held in committee.
In Illinois, the pair asked Murphysboro Republican Mike Bost to help shepherd their resolution by the General Assembly of the State. Governor Rod Blagojevich has proclaimed September 26 "to mesothelioma awareness day," but the resolution Bost present on behalf of Graeff Caraway and make the permanent appointment.
