nominee Environmental Protection Agency Lisa Jackson has decided to focus on the town of Libby, Montana if confirmed. Western News recently highlighted the request of Montana Democratic Senator Max Baucus Jackson Libby visit to see firsthand what achievements have been made and that efforts must be continued.
Senator Baucus, a member of the Environment and Public Works Committee, has long promised to help the residents of Libby and is hopeful of working with Jackson if confirmed by the position of the EPA. Jackson also confirmed his intention to visit Libby if it receives the post examine previous efforts, meet with residents and discuss their needs and concerns.
Baucus asked the EPA in the years before declaring Libby a public health emergency. The EPA, after meeting with the White House Office of Management and Budget, blocked the effort. The EPA has not followed by efforts to remove residents home insulation asbestos. However, adequate medical care is not always provided to many residents who are sick from exposure to asbestos.
It was in 01 that the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry and EPA has determined that many people Libby had already succumbed to exposure to asbestos and more 1000 other people had early signs of diseases related to asbestos.
Senator Baucus and Libby residents hope that Lisa Jackson will receive the EPA position and be able to work through budgets and funding restrictions to help residents obtain medical support they need.
