Dr. Joseph S. Friedberg, head of UPenn mesothelioma program, recently had published a study that includes some good news for mesothelioma patients. The results of the study show that, after more than two years of undergoing lung surgery savings with photodynamic therapy, 27 of 38 (or 71 percent) of patients are still alive.

The average survival time after diagnosis of mesothelioma rate ranges from several months to a little over a year. The Penn Mesothelioma program uses a lung sparing approach that combines conventional treatment, gene therapy, t-cell therapy and photodynamic therapy

It is still too early to say how reliable treatment can be. it's only been two years, and much more research is needed. However, there are differences that make the procedure Dr. Friedberg stand out.

One of the most aggressive ways to treat pleural mesothelioma, which affects the lining of the lungs, is to perform an extrapleural pneumonectomy. This means that the entire diseased lung is removed.
This is usually followed by chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Dr. Friedberg, on the contrary, was leaving the lung. It increased from 10 to 14 hours of stripping the cancer while maintaining the patient lung and then burns the remaining microscopic cancer cells with laser light therapy.

therapy laser light, also known as Photodynamic therapy requires that the patient is injected with a liquid medicament which makes them highly sensitive cancer cells to normal light. When the drug is exposed to red light, it triggers a chemical reaction that destroys the cells, damages blood vessels that feed the tumor and activates the immune system, according to a new Philadelphia Inquirer.

With this approach, Dr. Friedberg believes patients are better able to fight against cancer when or if it happens again, which increases the median survival of patients. His study was published in the June edition of the journal Annals of Thoracic Surgery.

As a supporter of the Penn Mesothelioma program, we are all very excited at the firm that Dr. Friedberg and his staff do such important work for mesothelioma patients.
