November is lung cancer awareness Month and this year you can walk, run, fly a kite or grow a beard to increase awareness and raise funds for research. By participating in one of the many events taking place throughout the country this month, you join a community of survivors, patients and advocates dedicated to improving lung cancer treatment and survival .
What started as Awareness Day lung cancer in 1995 became a month of awareness and fundraising. For nearly 20 years, communities have come together to improve the lives of people diagnosed with lung cancer. And there is still much work to do.
In the last decade, the survival rate for cancer shake barely lung from 15 percent to only 16 percent, according to free breathing, a nonprofit that raises money for the research on lung cancer. The group aims to double survival in 2022.
David LeDuc, director of strategic partnerships at the nonprofit hopes to achieve this by allocating funds to specific types of research.
?? Breathe Free is focused on the advancement of scientific advances in lung cancer by funding research with the greatest potential to lead to new treatment options and increased survival, ?? LeDuc said Asbestos.com.
To raise funds, the nonprofit hosts over 40 events in 26 countries throughout the year. Most events take place during November, including tracks / walks, a Yogathon, Autumn week and Beards National March for hope. Money raised also helps fund support services to patients the ?? nonprofit and a new grant program.
?? Since we know that the survival of patients is higher when the cancer has not spread to other organs in the body, free Breathe recently launched a new research grant program that will provide larger amounts of funding for researchers focused on stopping the spread of lung cancer ??, LeDuc said.
Mesothelioma, which develops in the thin membrane that surrounds the lungs, heart or abdominal cavity, is linked to exposure to asbestos and produces symptoms similar to lung cancer. Another aim not profit dedicated to accelerating research on lung cancer LUNGevity is the largest private funder ?? s the nation of research on lung cancer. LUNGevity encourages scientific research that focuses on the early detection and more effective treatment. They also offer support, education and community to anyone affected by cancer.
To finance all they do, LUNGevity organizes the largest national network of local events dedicated to raising funds for research on lung cancer. A wide range of events are held throughout the year, including walks / runs, endurance events, galas, golf outings, summits, concerts, fashion shows and receptions.
The Lung Cancer Alliance is another nonprofit that educates and helps people affected by the disease. They focus on helping patients and caregivers by creating community and providing support services. The organization welcomes "Shine a Light on Lung Cancer" vigil held each November to honor the survivors and relatives.
Nearly 0 vigils will be held across the US this year and more will take place internationally. Each event offers stories of survival and information on the latest advances in treatment.
on 20 November, smokers across the country will participate in the Great American Smokeout . Promoted by the American Cancer Society, the annual event held on the third Thursday of November. the event began in 1970 as a small gathering in Randolph, Massachusetts, and grew up in a large awareness campaign that propels anti-smoking laws and motivates smokers to quit. What smokers quit just for the day or planning to quit smoking for good, the Great American Smokeout is an opportunity to stop smoking with huge quantities Support.
