In the third and final part of this series on fundraising for mesothelioma, medical director Outreach Kaylen Jackson passes over talking points either for your letters or your face meetings with government officials. As Kaylen touched last week, it is very important to go to your local officials exactly why this is an important issue and personal to you, and why you feel public funds should be increased for research into mesothelioma. "Hi I'm Kaylen and I am the director of medical advocacy for mesothelioma Centre.
In the video of last week, I went on how to contact your elected officials to advocate for increased funding for research on mesothelioma. Today I wanted to share some speaking points that you can use in your letters and at these meetings.
first of all, I think it's important to talk about the heart, share your personal story and how mesothelioma has only affected you and your family. After that, here are some facts to help illustrate why this disease needs their attention.
medical experts determine mesothelioma to be one of the most aggressive of all cancers it is caused by asbestos, a material still widely used today.
Only 55 countries have actually banned the use of asbestos. Currently in the United States and Canada are the only Western industrialized countries still use asbestos materials. In 2010, 1100 tons of asbestos was shipped to the United States for use in the products we see every day.
the 3000 person with mesothelioma every year, many of them are people who were exposed to asbestos during their service in the US Army. Others were exposed in factories for a time that our nation was built prosperity. We owe our freedom and wealth of our nation to these individuals and their sacrifices.
More recently, those affected include firefighters and first responders of the 9/11 attacks. This is a disease that affects the hero, the most honorable and hardest working individuals of our nation.
In 08, 09 and 2010, mesothelioma is one of many diseases localized in a pot of funds allocated in the amount of $ 50 million dollars for research. In 2011, this pot has been reduced to only $ 16 million dollars. Due to its direct link with the military exhibit, we ask that the Ministry of Defence to allocate $ 5 million as a post just to be dedicated to research on mesothelioma. These are people who not only deserve our help, they have earned.
Good luck in your meetings. If you need help with language issues, let us know. And thank you for watching. "
