Illinois county leads nation in asbestos suits

Anyone who watches television during the day is bound to see a lawyer publicity seeking potential clients suffering from mesothelioma or lung cancer often caused by exposure to asbestos.


According to a report by the consulting firm KCIC, downstate Madison County, Ill., Ont represented almost half of deposits related mesothelioma lawsuit, the country in 2015. 


The lawyers filed 1012 trial in the county last year. The next highest was Cook County, Illinois, with 114. 
Madison County is home to about 267,000 people.

Travis Akin, executive director of the Illinois Lawsuit Abuse Watch, called the figures alarming trend.

 "It just screams that we need common sense reforms here in Illinois," he said.
 "The situation that we thought to get better looks just as it continues to worsen. 
Asbestos Lawsuits have become a cottage industry in Madison and St. Clair counties."

The report lists the St. Clair County with 101 lawsuits related to asbestos in 2015. 

St. Clair County were cited as representing 0.3 per cent of national mesothelioma.

Akin said the reputation of Madison County for lawsuits related to asbestos does not draw more lawsuits.

 "If you build a judicial hellhole, trials will come. 
Word out." Hey, drop your trial here. Find a way to deposit in Madison County. "

The study also noted that Gori based in Illinois Edwardsville, Julian & Associates filed most cases related to asbestos by any company in the country last year with 460 depots.

 The report says that the company has filed 263 cases of mesothelioma in 2015, with 253 filed in Madison County.  
Mesothelioma cases are included in the documents related to asbestos.

KCIC believes his study more than 90 percent of all deposits related to asbestos in the United States.  

When factoring in all the deposits related to asbestos, 1 of every 4 suits were filed in Madison County.

Madison County Circuit Chief Judge David Hylla was not immediately available for comment.
