Obama Administration Issues Statement Against FACT Act -

House to vote today on legislation that Deny, Delay justice for asbestos victims

the House of representatives of the United States will meet this afternoon to discuss the so-called "asbestos claims Promoting transparency" law or House Resolution 982. the proposed asbestos law is one way and only serve to delay and deny justice for asbestos victims who have suffered unnecessarily at the hands of corporate interests.

administration issued a policy statement, or SAP, yesterday opposed the Bill because it is based on "false assertion that there is rampant fraud" in the system of asbestos bankruptcy. Several independent studies prove fraud is negligible.

The SAP also addressed other concerns about the bill on asbestos, including the intrusion of privacy and security risks inherent in the legislation of reporting requirements. He also said the bill is fundamentally detrimental to veterans because they are disproportionately affected by diseases related to asbestos.

" mandatory reporting requirements and disclosure The bill would threaten the privacy of asbestos victims when they seek payment for injuries caused by asbestos trust bankruptcy sensitive personal information of applicants. - including their names and exposure history - would be irrevocably released into the public domain and therefore available to non-related complaints parts (including insurance companies, potential employers, lenders and data collectors). these parts could then use this personal information for purposes completely unrelated to the compensation of asbestos exposure, potentially at the expense of asbestos victims. information this public register could be used to deny employment, credit and insurance. the victims would be more vulnerable to identity thieves and other predators. These requirements could be particularly damaging to veterans of United States Armed Forces who have been disproportionately affected by asbestos. "

According to The Hill, the House will begin debating the rule for the bill on asbestos, then consider up to three amendments. Finally, it will discuss the bill and amendments before voting on the bill later this evening.
