Mangosteen: A Tropical (and tasty) Cancer Fighter -

It seems that every few months there is a new "superfood" for recognition in the world of health and- welfare. Interestingly, these foods are often common parts other international cuisines.

Take, for example, mangosteen ?? the subject of an article in the April 2013 Journal of Natural Medicines. This is certainly not the first study to explore the health benefits of the fruit, but the interest of Americans mangosteen has certainly accelerated in the last few years.

The fruit ?? scientifically known as Garcinia Mangostana ?? was discovered there over 400 years. Since its discovery, other cultures have used as a natural remedy for infections, diarrhea and urinary disorders; Now, we watch as a defense against cancer.

The Journal of Natural Medicines study gave the extract to mice with colon cancer. After exposure to the mangosteen, the shrunken tumors between 50 and 70 percent. The mice that received the dose Mangosteen also lived longer than mice not receiving treatment.

The antioxidants in mangosteen pulp are highly bioavailable ?? which means it is very easy for your body to reap their benefits. Although there are several anticancer compounds (called xanthones) in the fruit, two are particularly effective: alpha-mangostin and gamma-mangostin. Both compounds act primarily by stimulating the activity of natural killer T-cells in the body (NKTs).

Choosing a mangosteen extract

Unfortunately, mangosteens are not native to the United States, and they can not be imported. (The Department of Agriculture cited their ability to harbor parasites as the reason for the ban.)

This is not to say that the only people who can enjoy its benefits are those living in the tropical climates of Indonesia and Malaysia, where the plant usually grows. An excerpt of quality mangosteen can bring the same benefits to the whole plant, and supplements are easily (and legally) obtained in the states.

As with any nutritional supplement, it is important to choose a reputable quality. How do you know if a product is worth mangosteen?

  • The active dose should exceed 100 mg, but less than 0 mg. Doses below this level are not correlated with significant health benefits; doses above this level have a higher risk of toxicity.
  • mangosteen should be the first item in the ingredient list. (On edible products, the ingredients are listed more powerful the less powerful. If mangosteen is not the first item in the list, you pay for charges and generic mixed juice.)
  • It is the fruit whole, not just the inner pulp. The majority of the nutrients are derived from the skin of the fruit
  • . It should come from a nationally recognized manufacturer and the mark should not be sold exclusively online. Even if you are buying from an Internet retailer, you should still be able to contact a company representative who will answer questions and handle returns, if the product does not work for you .
  • It should not make any medical claims, such as "stop cancer growth."

It is also important to use the extract with caution. A Memorial Sloan Kettering study found that daily consumption over a year increased lactic acid levels in the blood of the users; such accumulation may increase the risk of complications such as shock a person.

A nutritionist oncology can give you directions to safely integrate mangosteen extract in your diet. Until you are able to discuss the bill with a licensed professional, it may be smart to wait to make your purchase.
