Ban Asbestos Bill Moves Forward -

There was encouraging news on Capitol Hill yesterday. The "Act of 08 Bruce Vento Ban Asbestos and Prevent Mesothelioma" was presented to the House by the Committee on Energy and Trade and Environment subcommittee on hazardous materials.

The law would prohibit the importation, manufacture, processing and sale of asbestos-containing products, protecting consumers and US workers against asbestos-related diseases, including mesothelioma , lung cancer and asbestosis.

The emergence of diseases linked to asbestos, including mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis, continues to increase. Studies estimate that during the next decade, 100,000 victims in the US will die of disease linked to asbestos -. Equaling 30 deaths per day

Linda Reinstein, co-founder and executive director of the advocacy organization with diseases of asbestos, had this to say: "a ban of asbestos in the United States is long overdue, and we applaud the green chair and other committee members to take a leadership role to enable the introduction of the proposed critical law ".
