New program expands financial assistance for travel expenses for mesothelioma patients
The Foundation for Applied Research Mesothelioma increased possibilities of reimbursement of travel expenses. Their Travel Grant program will now provide financial support for mesothelioma patients participating in clinical trials that require long distance tours. Previously, costs were covered for those traveling in a first consultation with specialists. The Meso Foundation has begun accepting clinical trial applications traveling at the end of June.
Patients seeking mesothelioma treatment from clinical trials can receive up to $ 1,000 in grant money. This grant can be put towards transportation, food and accommodation during the trip.
Unfortunately, because mesothelioma is a rare cancer, it can be difficult for patients to find doctors who specialize in treating mesothelioma close to home. Accordingly, it is common for patients to travel to receive care. After the initial visit, however, specialists can often work with local physicians to administer the treatment without other trips.
The Travel Grant program helps take some of the load off of patients with mesothelioma who face this difficult diagnosis. To qualify, patients must be in one of three situations:
- Patient moves to a caregiver or consult expert mesothelioma. Repeat visits are not covered.
- The patient relapsed after treatment by a specialist and travel to seek new treatment options.
- The patient is enrolled in a clinical trial that requires travel. Because clinical trials involve multiple visits, the program can cover future visits as they are each registered as individual applications.
Those applying must also demonstrate financial need showing they require travel assistance expenses.
