The asbestos companies use their political pull to influence the passage of a harmful bill for asbestos victims in the US House of Representatives. House Resolution 982, the so-called "Asbestos Claims transparency Promotion Act", was scheduled for a vote next week. If passed, it would deny and delay justice for those diagnosed with diseases linked to asbestos, such as mesothelioma.
H.R. 982 does nothing to help the 10,000 Americans who die from diseases related to asbestos each year. Instead, it requires asbestos bankruptcy trusts to disclose confidential information about victims of asbestos, including their history of work, family information and the last four digits of their Social Security Number .
The disclosure of this information benefits only asbestos defendants. They will bury trusts in information requests. Inevitably, this could slow down the claims process for asbestos victims who need these payments to offset their medical bills.
asbestos exposure is linked to lung cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma. The health hazards of asbestos were known by 100. Yet companies have used anyway and failed to warn their workers and consumers. Once diagnosed, mesothelioma patients have an average prognosis of six to 12 months. For these patients, deferred compensation is often fatal.
